Backyard Farming Week

Hello, lovelies. For three months I've been saving pictures, successes, and tragedies around the yard.
We had a big year, this year. We planted a new tree, landscaped and started the last phase of the patio remodel, added some new additions, and built a new raised veggie garden. It was also my first year to deal with a huge amount of pests, birds, mice, bad weather, and one big stinky lab that just could not stay out of my garden.

Year three of Backyard Farming has been the most challenging. My beginners luck has worn off, and in it's place I've found a huge passion for tending this yard of mine, and all the little forks in the road I've found along the way.

This week I'll be splitting these posts into a few sections: The Veggie & Herb Garden, Flowers, Landscaping, and Cooking From the Garden.

If there are any questions you'd like me to answer, let me know and I'll do my best.

See you soon, friends.

I'm no help on specific questions, though I know you'll get tons, but just had to say that I CAN'T WAIT!

I still have ants in my veggie garden. I've tried vinegar.. talc.. and they are still there, eating up my zucchini and squash. I'd love to know if you have any suggestions!

I've heard to put stockings over your squash & zucchini to keep the bugs from eating them. Not sure if that works or not. I usually use oil & cayenne pepper. Keeps the bugs off my corn.

Yummy yummy I cant wait these posts, specially cookings! I would love to have vegetarian recipes, how to make really good hummus and specially that do you make your tortillas by yourself or are these ready made?

I discovered the best sides of having garden at my parents, sweet forest strawberries and normal ones, petit pois (peas?) and blueberries. I love summer!

I can't remember if you answered this before or not - or if I missed it when you commented back but our biggest issue right now is not being able to grow/keep alive a cilantro plant. We've killed two of them this year and it breaks my heart. Is this herb trickier than the others or just more picky than the rosemary and basil? We even gave little Cil his own pot to grow in and he still left us.

Your bounty looks amazing! the last picture made me drool. The patio looks SO inviting how I wish we were neighbors! ox

I can't wait to have a backyard so I can garden! I only have a patio right now, so there's just enough room for a few pots: dwarf schefflera, impatiens and calla lilies - I'm bummed the patio faces the north, and gets no light. I would love to plant some herbs or tomatoes, but they need sun!

Hi! my father takes care of his garden every summer and for many years. I love fresh vegetables, it smells so good and is full of color. The ants and snails feasts also ^ ^. What dish do you prefer?

@hollie
Thought you may have some luck with baking soda. Put it in a line where you do not want the ants to cross it is environmentally friendly and it works!

These are really amazing photos. I do have a question, it might sound selfish, but I really admire the layout of your blog and want my blog to be just as pretty :) How did you get your header to be so nice and big, but centered to? Thanks!
